Gabriela Sabatini’s countryman, Juan Martin Del Potro, is all set to go through a wrist operation tomorrow. He would have to remain out of action for a few months because of that.

Del Potro’s wrist had been giving him problems for quite some time. He had to miss tournaments because of that. So, finally, he decided to go for the permanent solution of the problem which is surgery.

The doctor who would be doing that operation of Del Potro is not an unfamiliar one for him. He had done his operation once in the past as well and that was a successful operation. The Argentinean would be hoping that he does a good job this time around as well.

Interacting with his fans on a social networking site, Del Potro admitted that opting for surgery was a difficult decision at this stage.

The statement that he released on that site reads, “It’s never easy for any sportsperson to go under the knife as after that you have to remain on the sidelines for several weeks which can be very frustrating and then when you return, it takes you a while to get into your groove. So, I guess a difficult period awaits me, but, that happens with everyone and you have just got to deal with it.”

Earlier, it had been assumed that Del Potro would go for surgery after the Miami masters, but, the Argentinean realized that he would not be able to get through the tournament with that wrist of his and thus, he withdrew.

Del Potro is presently in top 10 in the official ATP rankings, but, his time away from the game after the surgery would affect his position there. However, that’s not something that he would be worried about.

Gabriela Sabatini’s countryman, Juan Martin Del Potro, has defeated Nicolas Mahut of France in the second round of the ongoing Apia International Sydney Tennis Tournament. This win has taken Del Potro to the quarter final round where he will play against the Czech player Radek Stepanek.

This was Del Potro’s first match in the 2014 season and as expected, he was a bit rusty at the start. There wasn’t that much fluency in his shots and he gifted away the points to his opponent on a regular basis to lose the opener by a big margin of 1-6, but, after that, he looked an entirely different player. He committed very few errors in the next couple of sets and ended up winning the match.

This was only the second time that Del Potro was facing Mahut. Before this, these two guys had taken on each other at Flushing Meadows 6 years back in 2007 and in that match also; it was Del Potro who had emerged out as winner.

The 25 years old Argentinean player would be quite happy to begin the new season on a winning note. He had played brilliantly right through the previous season and he would like to do the same in the ongoing season too.

Talking to the reporters after the match against Mahut, Del Potro said, “This was my first game in about eight weeks and I think I played alright. The surface was quite quick and I had a bit of difficult initially, but, I adjusted my game accordingly in the last two sets.”

“Nicolas is a difficult guy to play against. Every time I play against him, there is a close match.”

Del Potro is currently at the 5th position in the official ATP rankings.

Gabriela Sabatini has said that when she was young, she used to lose games intentionally because she didn’t want to have a chat with the reporters. According to the former Argentinean superstar, she was an introvert girl and she used to feel nervous while talking to the press.

Talking to the correspondent of a newspaper recently, Sabatini said, “At the start of my career, I used to suffer defeats intentionally because I knew if I won, I would have to talk to the press. So, in order to avoid that, I used to lose matches.”

“I was a shy girl and I used to have problems in my schooling days too. I couldn’t talk to people with confidence. I used to get nervous.”

“I was not lacking competitiveness though and that’s why whenever I lost a match intentionally, I got disappointed.”

Sabatini had caught everyone’s eyes when she had first burst onto the scene in the mid eighties. She was seen as a hugely talented young player and was expected to achieve huge amount of success. But, she couldn’t quite live up to the expectations. She managed to win just one Grand Slam singles title in her career. Also, she didn’t become the no. 1 player in the world ever. The highest position that she managed to achieve in the WTA rankings was no. 3.

When asked about the reason behind her not becoming the no. 1 player in the world ever, Sabatini said, “I think my huge popularity was one of the reasons behind it. Having a low profile helps you to focus on your game much better. But, when you become as famous as I had become, it gets a bit tough.”

Sabatini retired from professional tennis 17 years back in 1996.

Gabriela Sabatini’s countryman, Juan Martin Del Potro, has been defeated by Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in the second round of the ongoing US Open. Hewitt won the match in five sets by 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1.

It was a fine performance by the 32 years Australian veteran. He was close to losing the contest at one stage, but, he didn’t let the panic set in. He battled it out incredibly well and came out victorious at the end.

It was the 5th match between these two players and Hewitt defeated Del Potro for the 3rd time.

In the opening set, Del Potro started brilliantly and broke Hewitt’s serve in the second game to take a lead of 2-0.

In the very next game, Hewitt broke back and then, by holding his serve in the next game, he levelled the proceedings.

In the next couple of games, there were no serve breaks and then, in the 7th game, Hewitt sneaked a breakthrough again to get ahead by 4-3. Thereafter, he just bagged his next two service games and clinched the set.

In the second set, the first 8 games went with the serve and the scores were levelled at 4-4. Hewitt broke Del Potro’s serve in the 9th game to take a lead of 5-4.  It seemed that the Australian player was going to win back-to-back sets. But, Del Potro didn’t let that happen. He won the next 3 games in a row with some fantastic shots and sealed the set by 7-5.

Del Potro continued flourishing in the third set as well and bagged it with ease with a couple of breakthroughs.

Now, the pressure was on Hewitt. He had to win the next set somehow to extend the match. He seemed to be doing that easily when he managed to get up by 5-3 by sneaking a breakthrough in the 8th game. He was serving for the set in the next game, but, he failed to serve it out and his lead got decreased to 5-4.

Both the players held their serve in the next 3 games and the set went into the tie breaker where Hewitt soaked up the pressure remarkably well. He let his opponent win only a couple of points and pulled off the tie breaker to drag the match into the 5th set.

In the decider, there was no stopping Hewitt. He was in his zone. With 3 successive serve breaks, he bagged 6 out of the first 7 games to win the match.

Gabriela Sabatini’s countryman, Juan Monaco, will take on Benoit Paire of France in the third round of the ongoing German Open. The player who wins this contest will make his way into the quarter final round of the event.

Monaco has looked in supreme touch in this tournament. In the second round, he had got better of another Frenchman Gael Monfils with utmost ease.

Monaco is a fine clay court player. He has tested some great players on slower surfaces. He covers areas quite quickly and also has a very good serve.

Monaco was rated very highly by the pundits when he had first burst onto the scene, but, he hasn’t managed to live up to his potential so far in his career. Inconsistency is a big worry for him. One day, he looks unbeatable, the next day, he looks ordinary. He will have to work on his consistency for sure if he has to move up in the world rankings.

The 29 years old Argentinean is currently at no. 20 in the official WTA rankings. He would like to improve his ranking and break into the top 15 by going all the way in this tournament.

Monaco has so far played 30 matches this season out of which he has won 16 and lost 14. These numbers suggest how inconsistent he has been.

Monaco’s opponent Paire is also considered as a superstar in the making. He is another player who has got a lot of talent, but, he has also struggled to do justice to his talent.

Paire is very strong on his serve and his forehand shots are quite effective too. He has so far played 44 matches this season out of which he has managed to win 24.

Monaco and Paire has so far locked horns with each other only once i.e. in the Roma Masters earlier this season. It was Paire who had won that match.
