Recalling her days on the court, the former tennis champion and winner of the 1990 US open Gabriela Sabatini has said she lost a great deal of her matches in her youth to escape public scrutiny and avoid interacting with press reporters.
During the peak of her career, the former player was widely known and regarded as one of the most gifted, charismatic and talented players to have graced the tennis court in the 1980s and the 1990s. In recent comments published, the world former number three from Argentina said: “when I was younger and thought that I had to talk after winning a tournament, I often lost in the semi finals so I did not have to. It was that bad.” Sabatini was reported to have told the popular argentine newspaper la nacion
While the star showed great skill and resilience during her time on the track, it was hardly evident that she avoided the attention of the public. A true lioness in her day, she said “I was very introverted; I had some issues at school because I was very inward looking.”
Known for her tactical and competitive nature, the 43-year old currently has a line of perfumes named after her. In further talks, she said her shyness was her major shortcoming, “I got very nervous at times, but at the same time, I was very competitive and I got frustrated when I did not win. I might lose the first set and give up on the match just because I was so angry that I could not bear having lost the first set.” Read more »
Svetlana Kuznetsova was looking to book a flat somewhere in Rio for the time she had to be there for the Olympics, but, she was told by the members of organizing committee that if she stayed at a place other than the players’ village, she herself would be responsible for her security and nobody else would take the responsibility of that. So, she cancelled that plan.
However, she is not shying away from letting out her annoyance. She has been lambasting the organizing committee on a daily basis for the past week or so. There is not a single thing the Russia native seems to be happy with.
According to her, ahead of her previous match, she was not provided a court where she could practice. When her coach went to the officials and asked for one, they told him that the only practice court which was there was already booked for some other player. How could that be logical that a player couldn’t practice as someone else had booked it?
Kuznetsova also complained about ball boys saying that even they had been lazy and not discharging their duties properly. She says she has noticed the ball boys and none of them moves quickly to collect the ball and instead wait for the other one that maybe he would go and do the job. Read more »
The pre quarter final meeting between Andy Murray and Jeremy Chardy is going to be a heated one.
The statements that Chardy had made regarding Murray’s withdrawal from the Masters tournament in Rome would still have been quite fresh in the Scot’s mind and he would be pretty eager to prove a point to the Frenchman.
Murray had withdrawn himself from Rome citing weariness and Chardy was not happy about it at all.
According to Chardy, every player in the world looks to keep himself fresh and in proper shape for the slams, but, leaving a tournament in the middle phase just because of weariness is probably not the right thing to do.
Chardy, however, was of the view that it’s Murray’s career and thus, he’s totally entitled to make his decisions.
In the pre match interview, when Chardy was reminded of his statements, the 28-year old said, “I did not appreciate it to be honest. You go into a competition feeling well, you win the first match and then, all of a sudden, you pull out because of tiredness. It sounds a little weird, doesn’t it? But, then, it’s your career and you have every right to decide what you want to do.” Read more »
Its 19 years since Gabriela Sabatini quit playing tennis. She does not have any association to the game these days. She has turned herself into more of a businesswoman. She has a perfume business which she devotes most of her time to. But, she has not lost that fierce competitiveness.
Sabatini has to take on one of her old time rivals Monica Seles in an exhibition fixture coming up and she says that the adrenaline is pumping inside her for that game.
The rivalry between Sabatini and Seles used to be quite intense during those days in the nineties. These two players would draw a huge crowd to the arena whenever they were up against each other and they are again expected to do so in a week’s time even though they are not active players anymore.
Talking about the upcoming exhibition match, Sabatini said, “I am motivated for sure. It’s always a special venue for me, the Madison Square Garden. The crowd over there are so loud and intense. You would not get to see that sort of atmosphere at any other venue in the world. It pumps you up immensely. You tend to put in a bit of an extra effort just because of the support and backing that you get there.” Read more »
